Workplace stress is a growing concern in my practice. My patients are complaining of burn out, and suffering from high blood pressure and insomnia all due in part to the pressures in the workplace. With deadlines and personalities that are out of your control, it’s important to have coping strategies in place. Here are 3 of my recommendations to support your mental, emotional and physical health.
Number one – Stay physically active during the day – Sitting for 8 hours each day increases your risk of chronic lower back pain a condition that 80% of adults suffer from in the US. And you’re more likely to experience back pain if you aren’t physically fit. The solutions? Go for a brisk walk on your break, find a gym near your work place, and when possible, use the stairs.
Number 2 – Speak up – This one is difficult for some people but it’s soo important. If you’re unhappy about something or someone in your work environment, talk to your human resources department or supervisor about it. Staying silent will only breed negative emotions that will ultimately contribute to depression, anxiety and anger.
And lastly, Take your lunch break and eat at regular intervals – It may be tempting to work through lunch however, a break from your work can actually boost your focus and productivity. Eating regularly prevents dips in your blood sugar, can balance your hormones and may reduce the temptation for empty calorie fixes such as candy and coffee.
